The Museum of 20th Century Art in Berlin will be surrounded by exceptional buildings. History of architecture of that period is unthinkable without them. The nearest are Mies van der Rohe's Nationalgalerie, Hans Scharoun's Berliner Philharmonie and the Staatsbibliothek. However, these objects are more scattered islands of an archipelago, than a planned urban pattern. If we call this remarkable group of public buildings a “ chord“, then the building of a new museum will be the last note which lacks.
What are we suggesting?
First of all, we want to leave a gap between the Nationalgalerie and Kammermusiksaal as big as possible and thus preserve as much of St. Matthaikirchplatz for the "new" square. The "new" square will allow the St. Matthäus-Kirche to still be visible from the Potsdamer Strasse. The existing buildings, Nationalgalerie and St. Matthäus-Kirche, as well as the new museum building will all have the wide ring "of air" around them and will be viewed as conceived by their authors. We also preserve the square by lifting the museum "cube" into the air leaving the ground floor maximally transparent.
The Museum consists of three functional units. The ground floor is the entrance hall and lobby. Below the hall are accessory spaces. Above the hall, in the cube which "hovers" above the square terrace, are the exhibition halls. On the roof terrace there is an outdoor exhibition space with a view of Berlin.
